ROOMS 1 - Salle des Gardes |
The splendid Conclave room, whose superb wooden ceiling in the shape of an upside-down ship's hull has been entirely restored, occupies one of the most prestigious positions in the Palace. This was the guests' quarters in the 14th century. The great figures of the Christian world stayed here - King John the Good, the Emperor Charles IV, Pierre IV King of Aragon, Louis II of Bourbon, the Dukes of Orléans, of Berry, of Burgundy, and others. Exceptionally, during the election of the Pope, the Cardinals and their retinues stayed here. On such occasions, the arched wall at the end of the room was removed, and the Conclave became one with the Grand Tinel Hall, the vast Pontifical banquet hall. |
