The North Sacristy

The North Sacristy is in the South Wing, which runs from east to west and forms an angle with the previous building. Its layout is asymmetrical and it has two vaulted bays with intersecting ribs. This type of architecture, and the introduction of carved decoration, mark the difference between this and Benedict XII’s palace, in which there are greater number of wood-panelled vaults and ceilings.

The bridge that Innocent VI had built in 1360 to link his private apartments to the Great Chapel terminated in the first bay. It has since disappeared, however the access can still be seen near the window.
It was in the Sacristy that the Supreme Pontiff changed his vestments during ceremonies held in the Great Chapel.

Most of the plaster mouldings on show here were gifts from European cities. They portray political and religious figures or prestigious guests whom the Popes received at the Palace
