The Great Dignitaries’ Terraces

The terraces originally surmounted part of the New Palace buildings, the Great Promenade Gallery, and the Great Dignitaries’ wing, where you are now standing.

As a chronicler of the day remarked:

« Although in this part of the palace all edifices are majestic and admirable in aspect, three areas, however, surpass all the others : the Audience Hall, the Great Chapel and the upper terraces. All three are so remarkably structured that no palace in the world has anything to equal them ... »

The terrace affords a magnificent view of Avignon and the region, Villeneuve-les-Avignon and the Rhône.
