| Avignon, the capital city of the Côtes du Rhône wines, has the legacy of a long, deeply-rooted wine tradition, which started in 1308 under the instigation of Pope Clément V, who had vineyards planted in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Another Prince of the Church, John XXII, was the founder of the prestigious label "Vin du pape", or Pope’s Wine, which was later to become the "Châteauneuf-du-Pape" appellation. Since that time, the wines produced along the banks of the Rhône river have quite naturally evolved into becoming one of the greatest French AOC vintages.
